The peacock’s train, which is not technically its tail but an elongated set of upper tail coverts, can reach over a metre and a half in length. Each feather ends in an iridescent eyespot, green and gold and shifting depending on the angle of the light. The bird raises the whole display and vibrates it, creating a shimmering wall of colour that is difficult to look away from. It knows exactly what it is doing.
