The Vegvisir, whose name combines the Old Norse words for “way” and “guide,” appears in Icelandic manuscripts as a stave meant to keep its bearer from losing their path, even in storms, even in fog, even in waters with no landmark in sight. It was carved into the prows of ships, etched into wood, and worn on the body. A radial symbol of eight branches, each one pointing outward, as if to say: whichever direction you go, this knows the way back.
It is old enough that no one is entirely certain of its full history. But the intention was always clear: to know where you are, even when you cannot see it.
