The Marauder’s Map was made by Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs while still at Hogwarts, and it showed every room, every passage, and every person in the castle at any given moment. It could not be fooled by Polyjuice, or Animagi, or even the Hogwarts ghosts.
To open it, you had to mean it: tap your wand and say the words. I solemnly swear that I am up to no good. The map would not work for anyone who wasn’t willing to commit to that statement fully.
This pin is one half of a matching pair. The other is Mischief Managed, the phrase that closes the map when the business is done. Wear them together or separately. Either way, you know which side of the library door you belong on.
