The Levitation Charm (Wingardium Leviosa) was a spell used to lift objects into the air. First years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were required learn this charm before they could graduate. The spell required a certain amount of concentration and could only be cast effectively if the caster had proper wand control.

The Levitation Charm was the original spell and superior to lesser variations, such as The Hover Charm, Rocket charm, and Floating charm.

Though the Levitation Charm was strong and had many uses, one could not use it to levitate a human being—it only affected that person’s clothing.
